Tonight was a very interesting night for me! I had dinner with a teacher in Torrington and we talked in great detail about our philosophies and beliefs. I loved being able to connect with a peer who is already in the field. I was able to connect some of my Tuesday experiences with her experiences in her third grade classroom. Tonight was the first night that I felt like a professional and I look forward to student teaching because I will have many more of these experiences! We were able to share some great ideas with one another - such as classroom management, seating arrangements, and classroom libraries. For student teaching and when I have my future classroom, I will certainly collaborate with friends that are already teaching! Have you had the opportunity to talk with others that are already in the field? I would love to hear about people you already know teaching and some of the advice they have told you!

"Have you had the opportunity to talk with others that are already in the field?"

Last year I had the got to work a whole school year with an awesome second grade teacher. I loved talking with her and discussing lessons. She taught me so much, not just through our discussions but by example. She treated me like teacher, allowing me to take over the class for extended periods of time. Before the end of the school year she told me that I was also welcome to come back to visit and call and ask for advice. And she was good to her word. The best advice she gave me was: always plan more than what you think you will accomplish because you will always have students or lessons that will finish faster than expected. That advice has really paid off for this field experience. I am glad Taylor that you were able to find a teacher to collobrate with and made you feel like a teacher, that is awesome!!!

Reading the advice that your field placement teacher gave you was especially meaningful for me today! According to your blog, her advice was to "always plan more than what you think you will accomplish because you will always have students or lessons that will finish faster than expected." After today, I couldn't agree with her more! Also, my coordinating teacher offered me the exact same advice. However, he said to plan extra just in case some activities do not appeal to students or some activities may seem too easy/hard.

Today I planned for an hour to complete my science lesson on sound (vibrations in particular). Guess what happened? Instead of having an hour as planned, my time slot was slashed down to thirty minutes! Not being an experienced teacher, I was extremely stressed by the time constraint and having to modify on my feet. In a more positive light, at least I was more than adequately prepared as compared to not being prepared enough! After lunch I was able to tie up loose ends and do a few more small activities with the class. Today was such an invaluable learning experience!

Great advice! Thanks for sharing!

Wow! Tina:

You must have learned so much from talking with this peer, and have had an opportunity to learn from and take ideas from her experiences.

My parents are both teachers, and I have found them to be great resources to me. I have learned a lot from them about what it truely means to be a teacher, and continue to do so.

I have also learned a lot from my field students and from Tuesday Experience. It is one thing to read and study about teaching, it is a whole other thing to be implementing what we have learned out in classrooms.

I feel like having people in the Field of Education, whether parents, peers, friends or later co-workers it is always important to communicate with them. I feel like these people are great resources and have so much to offer us as we enter ourselves into the Field of Education, and while we are indeed teachers.

Now that I am in my Tuesday Experience, I am able to collaberate more with teachers. All the teachers at my school are very helpful, and I am working with more than one grade level sometimes.

I agree with all of you, it is important to have connections, especiallly being new to the field. It is very important to have many different ideas and concepts of teaching before starting your own classroom.
